How Egoscue can help kids

This is a terrific testimonial from our clinic in Orange County, CA. It highlights a really important point about Egoscue. When we say we work with people of all ages, we’re not kidding. We’ve had clients as young as 3 years old and as old as in their 90s. This is the story of a 6 year old boy whose life was severely limited by pain that doctors couldn’t diagnose. Then he found Egoscue, started doing some ecises and now he can be a kid again! I’m really happy for him and his family and wanted to share their story with you. Enjoy!

“When our son, Charlie, first began to walk, he use to hit his legs, rub them over and over again and cry. He was not old enough to tell us exactly what hurt, but we could tell something was wrong. The pain would keep him up for hours at night. We took him to doctor after doctor and no one could find anything medically to explain his pain. They labeled it growing pains and said there was not much that could be done for him.

At 6 years old he could not walk far or participate in sports without being in severe pain at night. However, he had the energy of a healthy, young boy and inevitably he would run, jump, and play…only to have to pay for it with the pain that brought him to tears at night.

We knew there had to be a better explanation than growing pains. There had to be something that could be done for our son. That’s when we found Egoscue.
Within a few short weeks of starting the exercises, Charlie’s posture improved. His joints began to line up better. We noticed a dramatic increase in his overall body strength. And best of all, the pain decreased substantially.

Today, gratefully, he is far more active than he ever has been. Recently, we went for a 2 hour bike ride! We came home and had him do some of the Egoscue exercises to prevent pain that night, and he was fine! No pain!

There are still occasional days when he struggles with pain, but it is far less than it was before Egoscue. And now, when he hurts, there is more to do for it than just giving him Motrin and wondering how long he’ll be in pain for this time. We have a plan of action. We immediately do some of the Egoscue exercises! By doing those, we are able to get the pain under control in 10 minutes or less! That is dramatic improvement for Charlie who used to suffer for hours at a time.

Needless to say, Egoscue has really improved Charlie’s life. He is such a happier kid now that he is not in pain all the time! We can finally be the active family we have always wanted to be. It is wonderful to see him outside running around and not have to worry that he’ll be in pain that night. Every child should be able to run and play without a care in the world. Egoscue has made that possible for Charlie.”

How to Double The Effectiveness Of Your Egoscue Therapy

In my blog post “The 5 Keys to Getting The Most From Egoscue”, I wrote about the importance of doing your menu consistently. They are designed to be done DAILY. Not 4 days a week, not 5, and not 6. EVERY day. And I explained why that is the case. Well, I received an email from a client, it’s a husband and wife who both come see us. Great folks (and congratulations on the new baby!), and in the email I thought they did a really nice job of highlighting the importance of this issue so I’m sharing that part of their email here. I encourage you all to learn from their experience and use this information to get the very most benefit from Egoscue that you can get.

The husband wrote the following:

“We read your article and caught the vision for doing menus everyday. I think
this is what I have been missing. Getting about 3 times the effectiveness.”

Then the wife wrote the following, and I’m really proud of her. They have 3 very young children, so you can imagine how busy she is. If anyone has an excuse to occasionally blow off doing her menus, it’s her. And yet listen to her thought process here and the results she’s obtained from it:

“I have good news . . . I have been doing my menus faithfully. Yes, daily. Mark brought Rick’s “Welcome to Egoscue” article home for me to read trying to encourage me. The part about being committed and doing the menus daily caught my attention. Yet, I didn’t know how to do it with three little ones. I prayed for wisdom and God gave me some ideas. First I made a plan to do my menus every day for 21 days straight. Then, I decided to ignore the house and everything else I needed to do until I finished the menu for the day. I would feed the kids and nurse the baby, but I didn’t get dressed or wash dishes or fold clothes or make phone calls until the menu was done. Wow. The difference in results was almost instant. By day five I felt like a shaken rag doll from the incredibly fast posture change that was going on. I have improved so much in how I feel and Mark says I look better too. I hope my pictures look better, let me know what you think. Day 21 was this past Saturday! Yea!!! My attitude started to get lazy again on Sunday so I made another 21 day commitment.“

Our New Pain Free Workshop!

Sorry for the lack of posts for the last week or so. The joys of working on taxes…….

So, we in the Austin clinic are very pleased to announce our new series of Pain Free Workshops! We’re going to be holding them the third Saturday of every month, at least that’s the plan right now. The next one is coming up on 3/21/09 from 10am to noon.

What is a “Pain Free Workshop”, you ask? Excellent question!

The idea is we want to provide people an easy, no-risk, no-cost way to learn more about Egoscue and their bodies, about the relationship between posture and how their bodies feel and function. The workshops will be 2 hours long and during that time we will….

  • Take people’s postural photos
  • Review their posture with them, providing detailed feedback on what we see
  • educate regarding the relationship between posture and symptom
  • give people basic advice and a few ecises they can begin doing immediately to begin improving their bodies
  • answer any questions

We’ve already done a couple ‘test’ workshops and they went VERY well, people were extremely enthusiastic about attending and felt they got a lot of value from the experience. And this also helps our clients. Many of our clients have become passionate referrers but sometimes it is hard to convey to someone what Egoscue is and how it can help them. Well, you don’t have to convince someone to start doing therapy, just send them to the workshop, they can get a lot of information and detailed advice on where their bodies are at and what options are available to them to start improving their situation.

One note: attendance is by reservation. We need to be able to plan on how many are coming, and attendance is capped at a maximum of 15 people. We can only provide a quality experience to that many people. More than that and it’s just too much to make it the quality experience we want it to be for the attendees.

Dealing with Economic Stress

I’m a big fan of a company called Learning Strategies. They offer a number of outstanding products that my family and I use. I get some of their newsletters and this latest one had a great article that I thought I’d pass along. Good advice for all of us during these “interesting times”.

The American Psychological Association says 80% of us have reported heightened stress about economic security. No kidding!

The good news is that it is fairly easy to get this stress and anxiety under control.

Anxieties are always about future events or situations where your brain wants to avoid the physical or emotional discomfort of possible future negative consequences. Anxieties are generally not about danger in the present moment.

A certain level of anxiety can be useful, helping you take swift action when needed. It can be a great internal warning system. But, many people use their imagination to turn anxious energy into stifling, debilitating fear. Left unchecked, such fear can control you.

But you needn’t let that happen. Follow these steps from our Anxiety-Free Paraliminal to turn your anxiety into personal strength and power:

1) Consider your current situation and level of anxiety. On a scale of 0 to 10, how would you rate it? A range of 4 to 7 is manageable and can serve you well as you redirect this energy. Think of anxiety as energy flowing through your nervous system. Feelings of anxiety are similar to feelings of excitement—the difference is in our attitude toward it.
