Sitting Kills

That’s a sobering title to this post, huh? Well, it’s no longer just my opinion, a new study shows the dangers of excessive sitting. You can read that article here.

For decades, scientists have studied exercise. But until recently, they paid little attention to the opposite end of the activity spectrum: the many hours modern humans spend sitting, barely moving at all.
But now the early results are in, and the science of sitting is producing sobering headlines. The bottom line, if you will: Sitting kills.

“The body’s idling state is very, very unhealthy,” says James Levine, an endocrinologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. “Much like a Ferrari, the human is meant to move.”

If you have a desk job, I strongly encourage you to take frequent motion breaks. You may think “I don’t have the time to do that, I’m busy” but I guarantee you that your lack of motion is decreasing your productivity. Even if all you do is take a 5 minute motion break once in the morning, then again in the afternoon, then take a 20 minute walk at lunch, you will be amazed at how much better your body copes with the physical demands of your job.

And if you are an Egoscue client with a desk job, you need to have a customized office menu provided by your therapist that will address your specific postural issues and give you that 5 minute motion break your body is calling for. If you already have one, terrific! Now use it. If you don’t have one, then tell your therapist at your next visit that you want one. It won’t cost you any extra money, we provide it as a service to our clients. Trust me, your body will thank you.
